Timing matters
When to go, honestly
There's no bad season — there's just bad packing. Here's the truth about each window.
- Dec–Feb: peak summer. Best weather, highest prices — book 4+ months out.
- Mar–May: our favourite. Golden light, quiet trails, harvest season in wine country.
- Jun–Aug: ski season in Queenstown and Wānaka; cheapest city breaks up north.
- Sep–Nov: spring — waterfalls at full power, lambs everywhere, rates still soft.
Summer: 20–30°C
Long days, swimmable lakes, booked-out lodges. Plan early or travel February.
Fiordland: 200+ rainy days
Sounds grim — it's actually why the waterfalls exist. Pack a shell and go anyway.
Ski fields: Jun–Oct
Remarkables, Coronet, Cardrona, Treble Cone — we bundle lift passes with lodging.
Sweet spot: March
Stable weather, softer prices, and the autumn colours starting in Central Otago.
Between the highlights
The drives are half the trip
New Zealand rewards the scenic route. These are the stretches our travellers rate highest:
- Queenstown → Milford: the Milford Road through Eglington Valley — leave at dawn.
- Wānaka → West Coast: Haast Pass, waterfalls every kilometre.
- Rotorua → Taupō: steaming valleys to the country's biggest lake.
- Queenstown → Glenorchy: 45 minutes that look like a film set (because it is one).
Self-drive or driven?
We arrange both — rental 4WDs with routes loaded, or private drivers for the days you'd rather look out the window.
